i am AMAZED at the power of networking. i am
the living proof that the damn thing works. let me tell you my story.
last week as i searched thru the depaul's online job board, i found a position that sounded perfect, with TransUnion. i applied, and thought that i should also find out whom i can speak to over there, so that i can either increase my visibility and also to learn more about the work culture. i went to my mentor, who then referred me to another person who used to work there. the dude knows two IT directors at TransUnion, gave me their numbers and told me he would also pass on my resume to these people.
i called them on monday. left voicemails. on tuesday, i got a decline for my application from the job board. i was disappointed, but went on with life. that afternoon, one of the IT directors called me, told me he got my voicemail, told me he got my resume, and told me that he forwarded my resume on to the recruiter who is coming to depaul next week to interview, and he wanted to let me know that bit of information so that
i knew where the process is at, and in case the recruiter and i missed each other,
supplied me with her information. flabbergasted at this new development, i said OK.
not two minutes after i spoke to the dude, the career center called me -- said they got a resume from the TransUnion recruiter and she wanted me to be put on the interviewing schedule. they also said that they will retract my decline for application (the one that i
just got this morning), and reinvite me for an interview. i sat there and was like ... "oh, ok .. "
long story short -- i am not interviewing for that perfect position next Tuesday.
crazy world, it feels like in am 'networlding'.
